Boise-Nampa MSA residents know the secret to success lies in education—a high
priority locally and statewide. Approximately half of the state’s general fund
is allocated to education. Idaho ranks among the top third of states for
percentage of adults age 25 and older that have graduated from high school (84.7
percent). The MSA also ranks among the top 18 percent of U.S. metro areas for
percentage of adults who have graduated from high school (86 percent); of those
adults, 25 percent go on to attain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The Treasure
Valley has six school districts offering education from kindergarten through
high school. The Boise Independent School District (BISD) ranks as one of the
most successful and high achieving school districts in the country, according to
Expansion Management magazine in its December 2004 annual study of 2,800 school
districts in the U.S.
BISD serves nearly 25,000 students in 34 elementary schools, eight junior high
schools, five high schools, one alternative middle-high school, one alternative
high school, an evening high school, and a high school for pregnant and
parenting adolescents.
The Treasure Valley Mathematics & Science Center (TVMSC) is a partnership
program between the Boise and Meridian school districts. TVMSC serves high
achieving students with an exciting, innovative, and integrated mathematics and
science program open to public, private, and home-school students across the
Boise metropolitan area. In addition, under the joint direction of the Boise and
Meridian School Districts, the Dehryl A. Dennis Professional-Technical Education
Center (PTEC) provides Ada County students with workforce skill development and
a seamless transition to active participation in economic and community roles.
All Boise Independent School District schools enjoy superior teachers with
strong support staffs and offer a wholesome, clean, inviting, and crime-free
learning environment for students. BISD students out perform the state as a
whole on the Idaho Standards Achievement Tests in nearly every grade and
subject.
The MSA contains a regional center for Head Start, several Montessori schools,
and a variety of other private K-12 schools. While the public school system
strives to include everyone, there are also a number of educational testing
centers and private programs for those with special needs. Charter schools have
recently sprung up in the valley, in addition to several private and parochial
schools.
In addition, the Boise area has many licensed daycare facilities and progressive
preschool centers, including “Just for Kids,” an after-school program run by
the district itself and held onsite at many elementary schools.
